Once you arrive at Big Island, you will board an air-conditioned mini-van or bus operated by Polynesian Adventure Tours to begin your fully guided and narrated excursion to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Kilauea active volcano. En route to Kilauea, you will ride along the famous Banyan Drive section of Hilo, where the road is lined in beautiful Banyan trees, each containing a plaque depicting the names of famous individuals who have planted the trees over the years – such as Amelia Earhart, Franklin Dr. Roosevelt, and Louis Armstrong.
Following this scenic drive up Big Island’s coast, you will arrive at the fun-filled and spectacular Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. There you will explore Kilauea Volcano, which has been active since January of 1983. As recent as late 1990s Kilauea was one of the most active and visited volcanoes on earth. Once at Kilauea, your adventure continues with a hike over lava flow covering the village once known as Kalapana, and out to the famous Kaimu Black Sand Beach. While at Kilauea Volcano, you will also enjoy an overlook of the spectacular Iki Crater, which was once filled with lava during active eruptions. Years later, the surface of the crater is still warm to the touch. Also included as part of your Volcano Adventure is a stop at the beautiful Thurston Lava Tube. This amazing lava tube is located in the lush rainforest of Volcanoes National Park and is easily accessible. You will descend via stairs into a pit crater, then walk through the stunning cave-like lava tube. Thurston Lava Tube is a beautiful and intriguing natural phenomena you are sure not to forget! Also included in this amazing Big Island day trip is a visit to the Jaggar Museum of Volcanology. Exhibits at this one-of-a-kind museum include historic scientific equipment used throughout the years to study volcanoes, working seismographs, and actual clothing and gear from scientists who got a bit too close to lava.
